Supportive environments

I just wanted to write a little something regarding my experience of living with Tourette's syndrome and the outings that have been provided by Tourette Scotland.

My nephew, Aaron, was finally diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome this year. Alongside his TS diagnosis, he also has a diagnosis of Autism and ADHD. Every day is a challenge for him, from sensory overload meltdowns, motor tics that cause a lot of pain as well as coprolalia (offensive, contextual language tics) and copropraxia (often offensive gestures) to the generality of being a teenager in society today!

We have a great support network as a small family alongside the support that we receive from Tourette Scotland, and their monthly group meet ups. What has been really beneficial for not only Aaron, but our family, is the informal activities that we have been very lucky to attend. From Aaron and his Mum enjoying a weekend away to Fordell Firs scout camp, sessions at inflatable play areas and mixed sport sessions within The Portal in Irvine. These sessions provide opportunities for not only Aaron, but others with TS and their families to meet in a neutral location to chat and play alongside each other in a safe, relaxed environment.

The impact these activities have had for those with TS and their families have made such a significant difference. It has given Aaron the opportunity to socialise with others with TS, free from judgement and bias from the outside world, using Tourette Syndrome as a basis for fun, life experiences. We are very grateful for the support we have received from Tourette Scotland and the opportunities that they provide through their charity, volunteers and donations. Thank you!
