22nd - 23rd November 2008
The first meeting for Adults with TS was held at Langlee Community Centre on the 22nd and 23rd November 2008.
The venue is excellent, so conducive to the concept of 'space', relaxation and entertainment. The hall for footie and basketball doubled up as our dining room and we had the use of the coffee bar, snooker room, 2 quiet rooms and a large meeting room which doubled up as sleeping quarters. There were adequate toilet and shower facilities and also the availability of a computer, TV's and DVD's.
Much was achieved through informal discussion, meeting people for the first time and renewing friendships. People found out how others had dealt with situations, the coping strategies they use/d, and medications that had been or were being tried, with the ensuing side effects. Having exchanges with others who are going through or have gone through similar feelings and experiences in a relaxed and non-judgemental environment was considered very freeing and productive.
The 'formal' meeting had the following agenda:
1. Employment
2. Benefits
3. raising Awareness
Discussion ranged from disability discrimination, restricted choices of employment, different benefit entitlements and filling in of forms which led to discussion on other topics. A copy of the discussion summary can be sent out on request.
